What do you do while prayer journaling when God feels silent? No answers. No direction. Just a swirl of thoughts, emotions, and silence. And yet, this is where faith becomes real.
It’s not about the perfect words, the perfect mood, or even the perfect outcome. It’s about showing up, even when you feel like nothing is happening.
I remember one morning when I opened my journal and just stared at the page. I had nothing “spiritual” to say, just questions, stress, and exhaustion. But I wrote anyway. Weeks later, I looked back at that same entry and realized it marked the very start of my healing. Sometimes, we don’t see the shift until we’re on the other side of it.
1. When Prayer Feels Unproductive: Choosing Faith Anyway
We often expect an immediate sense of peace. We look for clarity or breakthrough when we sit with God. But real growth doesn’t always come with a feeling. Sometimes, it comes quietly, in the act of choosing Him again, despite how things look or feel.
Scripture: “We live by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
Journaling in dry seasons is an act of surrender. It’s a way of saying, “God, I’m still here. Even in this.”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
2. Your Journal Isn’t a Performance. It’s a Sacred Record
Falling into the trap of performance is easy. We often think our prayers need to be deep, polished, or powerful. But God isn’t grading your words. He’s receiving your heart.
Whether you’re writing scripture, venting frustration, or listing every worry, it matters. Your journal becomes a trail of breadcrumbs. It leads back to God’s faithfulness, even if you don’t realize it in the moment.
“Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord.” – Lamentations 2:19
3. What to Write When You Feel Disconnected
On the days you feel stuck or disconnected, write what you know, even if you don’t feel it:
- “God, I know You’re near.”
- “I believe You’re still working.”
- “I trust You with this situation.”
Even a few lines like that are seeds of faith planted in dry ground.
So if you’ve been struggling to pray or journal consistently, or wondering if it’s even doing anything, write it anyway. You don’t need to feel spiritual to be faithful.
Your words may not move mountains overnight. Still, they will move your heart closer to the One who sees it all.
